The Brief

As a part of a series of guidance documents released by Westminster Council, Love Design Studio and Shade the UK collaborated with Ed Barsley of the Environmental Design Studio to produce the Weather Ready Homes guide, a document providing practical guidance on how to prepare homes for extreme climate events. The guide was published in April 2026.

The Process

Working with Ed, the guide covered resilience strategies relating to overheating, flooding, storms, and drought. In total, 65 strategies were developed that spanned a range of abilities. From simple approaches such as placing potted plants on roofs and balconies, to retrofitting or replacing key plant equipment, the document ran the gamut of resilience strategies.

With additional input from Westminster council, the guide also provides practical insight into seeking planning permissions and listed building consent, cost, and difficulty across three distinct building typologies; mansion blocks, terraced homes, and modern flats.

The Result

The guide is published and sits alongside Westminster’s other retrofit guidance documents, ready to serve local residents.
