About the study

ATTENUATE is a UKRI-funded collaborative project focused on unlocking private sector funding for climate adaptation, building the case for greater public sector investment, and addressing governance barriers to investment.

The project’s aims are to:

1. Generate economic evidence on the costs and benefits of adaptation policies

2. Assess how government can leverage enabling environments for mobilising finance

3. Identify and tackle behavioural barriers to investment in adaptation.

The project is a collaboration between the Environment Agency, Green Finance Institute, Paul Watkiss Associates and the University of Bath, the project is funded by the UKRI-Defra ‘Maximising UK Adaptation to Climate Change’ programme.

Our approach

The project is producing case studies on flood risk and extreme heat. These case studies will be used to inform local and national government to help develop adaptation options and develop a UK Climate Adaptation Investment Framework.

Love Design Studio is leading the delivery of Work Package Four which focuses on developing case studies of climate risks and adaptation interventions. Our work is most heavily involved in a case study in the London Borough of Hackney where we are providing technical support for the modelling of building performance and overheating. The Hackney case study is focused on extreme heat risk and overheating in social housing stock in Hackney.

Outputs from the study

The project aims to contribute meaningfully to adaptation efforts in the UK by providing additional insights into the hazards presented by climate change, the human and economic costs of these hazards, ultimately developing the enabling conditions to influence climate adaptation in the UK and internationally.
