The Brief
Originally envisaged as an office building, after a change of client, it was determined that the buildings at 22 and 24 Southwark Bridge Road would transition from office to hotel. The change of use required a fresh design team, in which Love Design Studio was appointed to complete a plethora of scopes, including BREEAM credits, a whole life-cycle carbon assessment, circular economy statement, air quality assessment, overheating assessment, equality impact assessment, and an energy and sustainability statement.
The proposed building, a 15 storey hotel, will unite the two buildings into a single structure rising above the approach to Southwark Bridge. Our brief was to ensure that the design was meeting, or exceeding the sustainability ambitions set out by the GLA and Southwark Council.
The Solution
By working closely with the design team throughout the design development, we were able to help embed some key sustainability principles throughout the design.
We completed a detailed whole life-cycle carbon assessment and circular economy statement, providing clarity on the carbon emissions of the present design. The reports also included guidance on key ways to reduce carbon emissions through strategic material and design choices such as using demolition waste to create finishes and furniture for the proposed development.
Our energy and sustainability guidance provided a pathway to ensure that the project would achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating through the use of passive design strategies to reduce energy consumption, high efficiency air source heat pumps to provide heating and cooling, and a large solar array to produce energy.
The Result
The project has now been approved for planning.
Love Design Studio will continue to support the project through the design stages by acting as the BREEAM Assessor and ensuring the scheme met the targeted sustainability credentials.
